Week 2 – Machine Learning Applications in Geosciences
In Week 2 of the Applied AI Essentials (AAIE) for Oil and Gas Industry Experts course, participants will explore the fundamentals of machine learning, focusing on both supervised and unsupervised learning. They will learn about key regression and classification models, including Logistic Regression, Decision Trees, Random Forests, Support Vector Machines, and Multilayer Perceptrons. Practical applications will be emphasized through case studies on seismic data analysis and reservoir characterization, with examples such as lithology classification and petrophysical parameter estimation. Hands-on sessions will introduce classical ML libraries like Scikit-Learn and XGBoost, culminating in the development of models for lithology classification and petrophysical parameter estimation.

Week 3 – Advanced AI Techniques in Geosciences
In Week 3 of the Applied AI Essentials (AAIE) for Oil and Gas Industry Experts course, participants will dive into advanced AI techniques with a focus on deep learning. The week starts with an introduction to neural networks and deep learning, covering the essentials of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) for image and seismic data analysis and Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) for interpreting seismic and wireline logs. Case studies will demonstrate the application of CNNs for seismic data interpretation and in-house CNNs for digitizing raster well logs, as well as the use of RNNs for processing wireline logs. Practical guidelines will be provided on structuring deep learning projects and efficient hyperparameter tuning. Participants will be introduced to deep learning libraries such as PyTorch and TensorFlow. Hands-on sessions will involve using CNNs for seismic facies analysis and RNNs for predicting missing log data.

Week 4 – Cutting-Edge AI and Integration in Geosciences
In Week 4 of the Applied AI Essentials (AAIE) for Oil and Gas Industry Experts course, participants will explore cutting-edge AI techniques and their integration in geosciences. The week begins with an introduction to Transformers and Vision Transformers (ViTs) for geological image analysis, along with image processing techniques using OpenCV and augmentations. Case studies will demonstrate the application of advanced AI architectures for fracture detection and vugs extraction from borehole image logs. The course also introduces Large-Language Models (LLMs) and their use in geological and geophysical report analysis, with a focus on Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) for assisted interpretation. Hands-on sessions will involve building Transformer models and creating a RAG application for querying large geological reports, equipping participants with practical skills to apply these advanced AI techniques in their field.

Week 5 – Model Deployment and HIVE Project
In Week 5 of the Applied AI Essentials (AAIE) for Oil and Gas Industry Experts course, participants will focus on model deployment and a comprehensive Hive Project. The week begins with an overview of cloud computing for AI in geosciences, covering high-level concepts of AWS and GCP. Participants will learn about deploying models using FastAPI, Flask, and AWS Lambda. The latter part of the week and the following 1.5 weeks are dedicated to the Hive Project, which includes tasks such as seismic denoising, seismic resolution enhancement, and impedance inversion. Additionally, participants will use Transformers to build a seismic facies analysis model and compare its performance with a CNN-based model. This week provides essential skills for deploying AI models and applying them to real-world geoscientific problems.

Week 6 – HIVE Project Continuation
Week 6 of the Applied AI Essentials (AAIE) for Oil and Gas Industry Experts course continues the Hive Project initiated in Week 5. Participants will delve deeper into advanced geoscientific AI tasks, including seismic denoising, seismic resolution enhancement, and impedance inversion. The week focuses on completing these tasks and refining the use of Transformers for seismic facies analysis, comparing the results with CNN-based models. This continuation provides an extended period for hands-on application, allowing participants to consolidate their learning and apply advanced AI techniques to real-world geoscientific challenges.
